Does your noisy neighbour give you the irrits?

If you answered yes, then you are not alone. One of the most common complaints about community living is noise. Not surprisingly. Think about it. At home we are exposed to all kinds of noise, and not just from our own property. There’s traffic, music, pets, the environment… so imagine the additional exposure to noise when living in a strata scheme.

Neighbourly noise is to be expected and, in most cases, is tolerated. Like hearing your neighbour’s tv or music, shower or flushing toilet, pets or conversations. But loud, inconsiderate noise late at night can take its toll on your community lifestyle’s wellbeing.

What you may consider as unacceptable noise, your neighbour may find enjoyable and relaxing. Like the piano. Or trumpet lessons. Argh!

Be a good neighbour

In all fairness, your neighbour may not realise you can hear reruns of Game of Thrones at midnight through the common wall. Or the windchime your in-laws gave you that has since been relegated to the balcony.

No matter what the noise is, communicate with your neighbour and try to sort out the issue amicably. You may be pleasantly surprised when a verbal or written request can result in a genuine effort to prevent the noise from reoccurring.

Help is always near

In the unfortunate case where the late-night partying or excessive noise persists, you can call for help. There are strata laws in place to protect you. In extreme cases, the police can help you too.

Contact your Building Manager, if you have one, or your Community/Strata Manager for advice as to how to approach the issue with your Owners Corporation or Body Corporate. It is in your best interest to seek a solution for harmonious strata living, for you and your neighbours.

And if you are the one causing the noise… stop it and consider the environment around you. Perhaps strata living isn’t right for you.
