For those who live within the City of Sydney’s local government area you would know that council is highly supportive and encouraging of owners corporations to do their bit for the environment and local resources.

From sustainability grants to environmental support and funding, the City of Sydney takes its initiatives quite seriously and encourages residents to participate in its programs.

Residents learn how they can save money and help reduce carbon emissions and water use in the city.

Smart Green Apartments

Smart Green Apartments improve the environmental performance of the City of Sydney’s strata buildings.

Each year the City of Sydney welcomes an intake of participants into its Smart Green Apartments program to help make buildings more energy and water efficient.

To date there are 172 buildings and 141 strata plans with over 27,000 residents in more than 13,800 apartments in the Smart Green Apartments program.

In recognition of each year’s participants and their achievements, the City of Sydney acknowledges the top performing communities and enters these as submissions for the Smart Green Apartments awards. These submissions are judged by the City of Sydney’s Renewables and Strata Resilience Team.

Award-winning smart green residential community

Hudson Apartments in Alexandria, managed by Strata Title Management (STM), was the proud winner of the City of Sydney’s prestigious Smart Green Apartments award for 2020.

Hudson was chosen as the winner thanks to its standout proactiveness and action towards implementing a multitude of upgrades, as well as its impressive, well-functioning Community Association.

The upgrades will save the Hudson Precinct approximately $40,000 a year in reduced energy costs. Simply by upgrading car park exhaust fans, a pool heat pump and lighting, the Hudson Precinct will save almost 300 tonnes of greenhouse gases a year.

Individual buildings at the Hudson Precinct are also investigating solar installation and additional recycling stream collections.

Residents are also participating in the City of Sydney’s food scraps recycling trial.

Not only is this community an environmentally conscious community, it’s also very pet friendly too!

Award-winning strata community management

In a ceremony with the Lord Mayor of City of Sydney, STM Regional Manager and Senior Community Manager, Lynne Kopellos, also received an award – along with her community at Hudson – for being the Smart Green Community Manager of the Year.

Lynne was chosen for the award as recognition of her professionalism and contribution to Hudson’s achievements, helping the Community Association function well and implement decisions smoothly.

Lynne works tirelessly with her committees and owners corporations for their maximum gain. She has extensive strata experience and openly shares her knowledge to help her clients make informed decisions for the best of their communities.

To witness Lynne and Hudson committee members be awarded by the Lord Mayor for their efforts was truly an honour and privilege. The mutual respect for one another was clearly evident and the community spirit was alive and contagious.

Hudson savings

  • almost $40,000 in energy bills a year – a reduction of 28%
  • reduced total site energy by 279MWh per year – a reduction of 51%
  • annual emissions savings are 298 tonnes of CO2 a year – a reduction of 48%

To represent that carbon emissions savings visually, one tonne of CO2 is approximately the size of 12 shipping containers. Hudson will be saving the equivalent of 3,576 shipping containers of CO2!
